EMU’s founding institution, the Institute of Higher Technology, is founded in 1979. To train a workforce that is intermediate between an engineer and a technician and award a “technician-engineer” diploma to successful students, the Departments of Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering begin offering 3-year programs to 105 students at the Institute of Higher Technology. The departments of mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering all transitioned to four-year programs in 1984. The governments of the Turkish Republic (TR) and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) concur on the 1985 establishment of the “EMU” university. The Institute of Higher Technology is visited by representatives of the T.R. Council of Higher Education to turn it into a university. After the Statute creating the North Cyprus Education Foundation and EMU (18/86) was approved by the TRNC Assembly, the Institute of Higher Technology was transformed into a state university and given the name EMU.

With 107 undergraduate and school programs, 103 graduate and doctoral degree programs, four schools, and foreign languages and English preparatory schools, EMU has been providing high-quality education. EMU prepares its students for their international careers with its highly developed infrastructure, illustrious academic staff, 16,000 students from 110 and 1,100 academics from 35 different countries, quality English programs, the chance to learn a second foreign language, student exchange programs, rich opportunities for sports, social, and cultural activity, international accreditations, an international teaching context, and a diploma recognized throughout the world.
